In the last few centuries music transitioned from an association with science to a pure art form. Why? Because science lacked the principle element of balance between overtone harmonics and undertone harmonics. In fact, in the 19th Century undertone harmonics were rejected scientifically because they could not be observed experimentally, yet, in the 20th Century studies in acoustics and physiology showed that undertones were indeed a natural and required phenomenon as part of a natural amplitude modulation (undertones act as the modulating wave and overtones act as the modulated wave). However, this knowledge came too little too late. The die had been set and music was entrenched as an art form. It no longer mattered if the origin and meaning of musical key could be defined and explained. It no longer mattered if there was some underlying structure to music that defined musical tones and tone relationships. What mattered was that the composer was simply free to put any combination of tones together as his or her personal art. But, is this really the case? Is the composer free? Freedom implies knowledge because it is knowledge that truly sets us free. Knowledge allows us to understand what we can do, for without knowledge we are limited by what we have experienced. This is why the major theory books today state emphatically that music is nothing more than a history of patterns. Clearly though, we have not experienced all the possible patterns, and even if the infinite number of patterns were available to us there would be no way for us to learn them all. Thus it becomes paramount that there be some underlying structure that explains all of the patterns and acts as a guide for composing and understanding new patterns. This is where Natural Resonance shines.
